When it comes to multi-tasking, all natural, beauty products, olive oil pretty much blows all other oils out of the proverbial bath water. In fact, if you haven’t already got a bottle of beauty-boosting, skin moisturising, frizz taming, makeup removing olive oil in your beauty cabinet, you need one… now.
Olive oil is packed with vitamins, minerals and natural fatty acids, making it a powerful skin saving tonic. Rich in antioxidants and Vitamins E and A, it combats the signs of aging, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines; it also nourishes, rejuvenates and protects the skin.
Here’s a guide to some of the amazing (and often, totally unexpected) beauty benefits of olive oil.
It’s a lip scrub
For good-enough-to-eat, instant relief from chapped or wind-burnt lips, simply combine a teaspoon of olive oil with a large pinch of sugar and a dash of lemon. Rub the solution gently over your lips to exfoliate, condition and smooth, leaving lips feeling soft and plump.
It’s a pre-wash hair treatment
Hydrating olive oil is the perfect ingredient to transform limp, lifeless locks to super strong, shiny tresses. Before shampooing, gently warm your olive oil in the microwave or a bain Marie and apply a generous amount from roots to tips. Secure your hair into a bun and relax for 10-20 minutes. Rinse and follow with your normal shampoo.
It’s a cuticle softener
Your skin may not always show when it’s dehydrated, but if it is, your hands will be the first to let you know. To relieve dryness instantly, massage olive oil into your hands and nails, paying special attention to your cuticles and the back of your hands. As well as sealing in moisture, olive oil will also help to strengthen your nails.
It’s an intense moisturiser
Do you suffer with dry skin and cracked heels? Smooth olive oil over freshly scrubbed, damp skin to lock in moisture and leave your skin silky, soft. Olive oil is so potent in fact, that with regular use, it has been shown to improve Eczema.
It’s a frizz tamer
Soft, shiny hair equals instant confidence. To tame flyaway hair or create show-stopping curls, simply smooth a few tiny drops of olive to the very tips of your hair. If you’ve got thick, coarse or very curly hair, use olive oil to smooth and separate curls.
It’s a makeup remover
With no chemical nasties, olive oil is suitable for most skin types and makes a great makeup remover. Rather than clogging up pores (as you might expect it to do) olive oil actually ‘grabs’ onto other oil based products, removing them with a few simple stokes. Simply smooth onto your skin and watch even stay-put makeup melt away. Finish up by rinsing your skin with warm water and dabbing it dry.
